Group Therapy

Diverse people in a supporting group session

Q: What is group therapy?

A: Group therapy is a form of psychotherapy where a therapist facilitates sessions with a small group of individuals who share similar concerns, challenges, or goals. The therapist may provide education and/or engage participants in discussion to promote personal growth, emotional healing, and interpersonal support.

Q: What is Psychoeducation?

A: Psychoeducation is often a major component of group therapy. It is the process of providing individuals with information, knowledge, and understanding about mental health conditions, psychological factors, and therapeutic approaches. The goal is to empower individuals to better comprehend and manage mental health challenges, improve coping skills, make informed decisions, and actively participate in their own treatment.

Q: Why group vs. individual therapy?

A: The benefits of a group setting include:

  1. Group Dynamics: The opportunity to observe, interact, and learn from each other can lead to increased self-awareness, expanded understanding, and the discovery of new coping strategies or solutions.

  2. Normalization and Shared Support: Participants can gain support from others who can relate and share similar experiences, struggles, and successes. This support can help others feel validated, less isolated, and gain a sense of belonging.

  3. Cost Effective: For some individuals, group therapy is often more cost-effective than individual therapy since the therapist's time and expertise are shared among multiple participants. This makes it more accessible for individuals who may have financial constraints.

It's important to note that group therapy is confidential, and participants are expected to maintain the privacy of fellow group members. The therapist establishes guidelines and ensures a safe and respectful environment for everyone involved.
