Individual Therapy

Q: What is individual therapy?

A: In individual therapy, a person works one-on-one with a trained mental health professional to address current challenges they are experiencing and explore strategies for positive change. It provides a confidential and supportive environment where individuals can discuss concerns, gain insight, validation, and work towards their goals.

Q: What will therapy look like for my family?

A:  That depends on your specific needs. For parents of autistic children, the sessions will be with one or both parents and will include education and support in navigating the autism journey. It may also include addressing mental health struggles one or both parents are facing. This could also mean each parent will need to be seen separately. For autistic adults and older teens, therapy may be with the autist but may also include the parents depending on the needs of the client.

Q: How does online therapy work?

A: Online therapy, also known as teletherapy, is a form of mental health counseling that is conducted over the internet or phone. It allows client access to mental health services conveniently and privately without having to leave your home. Online therapy can be conducted through video calls, phone calls, emails, and text messages. At Affirming Autism Counseling, all sessions are conducted via the online portal that clients will be given access to once they are established as a client.

Q: How can I get the most out of therapy?

A: I see my clients for 50 minutes, once a week. When you consider there are 168 hours in a week, we are only together for a fraction of that time. Therefore, if you want to get the most out of therapy, it will be critical for you to incorporate what you are learning into your everyday life. Whether this be completing assigned homework, trying out a new skill, or reading a recommended book. You will begin to experience the change you are seeking by implementing new routines and habits.

Q: How many sessions will I need to attend?

A: In short, that depends. Some clients may decide to address the most pertinent issue first and after 4-6 sessions have been able to implement enough change to begin seeing some improvements. They then might decide to take a break and come back as new issues arise. Other clients may decide to continue long-term and address a wide array of issues (20 or more sessions). Therapy is about you and your needs and will be what you make of it.
